Video: FourFiveSeconds – Rihanna, Kanye West And Paul McCartney

After dropping teasing hints about her new album for months and surprising the world by dropping a new single under her new own imprint, Westbury Road Entertainment, Rihanna has released the hotly anticipated music video for her collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney and Kanye West FourFiveSeconds.

Rihanna is known for her daring and risqué outfits as well as bold visuals which are often controversial but she offers none of that in this stripped down, black and white video to accompany the mostly acoustic song. Instead we are offered the jeans-clad trio earnestly crooning and playing to us in close ups and mostly solo shots in an unusual aspect ratio for most music videos with the occasional delightful frames of the entire trio. This is Rihanna giving us herself in a raw, emotional and unfiltered way that is in some ways reminiscent of what she gave us in Stay.

FourFiveSeconds is at No 4 on iTunes chart behind Missy Elliot’s Work It, which gained massive sales and airplay boosts thanks to a well received Super Bowl Half Time Performance. It also debuted at No 37 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart making Sir Paul the oldest act to chart here. It also currently sits on Billboards other charts at No. 19 on the Digital Songs, No 12 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and No 54 on The Hot 100.

Watch it below:

Rihanna, McCartney and West will perform FourFiveSeconds at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards that will be held on February 8, 2015 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Cover Drive “Speak Out”

The band Cover Drive became involved after visiting the conference in December where they spoke and interacted with students from all over the Caribbean who were in Barbados to learn about the program. So impressed were they that they got aboard and penned a new track which features the vocals of the Ambassador Dr. Larry Palmer.

Check it out and download it below:

The single was launched on May 25th in a short ceremony on the terrace of The Central Bank of BarbadosFrank Collymore Hall.

According to lead singer Amanda Reifer,“It’s a great opportunity and we’re happy to perform in a positive way in our community. We wanted the lyrics to be relatable; while we were writing it we wanted to find a way to not make it sound preachy but still get the message across.”

VIDEO: Stromae – Papaoutai

Papaoutai” is the newest single from Belgian (with Rwandan roots) hip-hop electronic music singer and songwriter Paul van Haver, better known as Stromae. Papaoutai is confirmed as the lead single taken from his highly-awaited sophomore studio album, still untitled, that’s scheduled for release later this year via Universal Music Group. The song comes after the international success of his debut “Cheese“, released in 2010, and the hit single “Alors on danse” which remained at number one for several weeks in many countries throughout Europe the same year.

It follows his usual style of laid back lyrics delivered over an infectious beat for a very catchy masterpiece you can’t help but want to sing-along to (even if you can’t understand the french).

The video’s themes and action echo Stromae’s refrain of “Où t’es? Papa, où t’es?” (Where are you? Dad, where are you?) and we can see the plot advanced by well placed choreography [no spoilers from me].

Check it out below:

The new single was released on iTunes on May 14. The music video was premiered on VEVO on June 6.

VIDEO: Seyi Shay – “Irawo”

Check out the brand new video for “Iramo” by British-born Nigerian artist Seyi Shay featuring Ijesha. Set on the beautiful Atlantic shores of Lagos, the Clarence A. Peters directed short, is an effects filled-glitz punctuated high energy (but at times Beyonce-esque) choreography and an easy-to-follow storyline.

In the video, we see the sexy Seyi Shay washed up on shore to find herself in a strange island. Thereafter, she is captured by hefty men who present her to the King (Ikenna Bryan Okwara), to be kept as his ‘plaything.’

The inspiration came from the 1988 hit “Rumba Dance” by another popular Nigerian artist, Mike Okri.

Introducing Seyi Shay:

Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua,  known as “Seyi Shay”, was born in London to Nigerian parents. Her mother is half Fulani, half Tapa and her father is Yoruba from Ile Ife. She attended primary school in Nigeria, before returning to the UK to finish secondary school.  She then went on to study Business Management.

Seyi Shay has toured with the likes of P. Diddy and Beyoncé in the UK, and has written and worked with a number of industry heavyweights like Justin Timberlake, Brian Michael Cox, Darey, Bilal, Michelle Williams and Chipmunk.

She was formerly the lead singer of British Pop/R&B girl group From Above which was signed to Sony/Columbia Record company and Music World Entertainment owned by Beyoncé‘s father; Matthew KnowlesFrom Above also had an MTV reality show, “Breaking From Above” which aired in over 166 countries worldwide.

Now, the singer/songwriter and producer is under Flytime Music and poised to release her debut solo album. She has already recorded a number of songs with top Nigerian producers like Jay Sleek, Tee-y Mix, Del B and Cobhams Asoquo.

NexCyx has a new single! “Eternal Summer”

Check out the single from Bajan band NexCyx – “Eternal Summer“:

The Great Gatsby

Cover of "The Great Gatsby"

The Great Gatsby is one of my favourite books out of all the books I’ve studied for my BA in Literatures in English. It is a brilliant book about love, obsession and the American dream. I love the extended metaphors visual depths of the imagery and the characterisations. (If you’ve never read it before go find yourself a copy or click the cover to the left to buy one.)

So you can imagine how excited I am about the upcoming Baz Luhrmann directed film.

I have high hopes for it.

Now with a several of the songs from the soundtrack floating around the internet those hopes have jumped even higher because the soundtrack is quite brilly.

Just check out the Jay-Z directed track listing below:

  • “100$ Bill” – Jay-Z
  • “Back To Black” – Beyoncé x Andre 3000
  • “Bang Bang” –
  • “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)” – Fergie + Q Tip + GoonRock
  • “Young And Beautiful” – Lana Del Rey
